Mina stepped off the train and onto the platform. The smell of London left her head with a breath of the refreshing country air. A part of her wanted to get back on the train, empty the bank account her father had left them and use the money to disappear. But that would be wrong. No matter how spoiled her siblings were, they didn't deserve to be left destitute. And the heartbreak it would cause her father was something she could never live with. Besides... more than anything she had to find out what had happened with Blue. Good or bad, she needed to know. Raising her chin, she walked down the platform to the road beyond.

She reached the steps, and Charlie hopped off a coach and hurried toward her.

“Mina Beana.”

“Charley Barley, what are you doing down here?”

“I came with Jonathan to pick you up.” Charlie grinned large as a crescent moon and gave her a deep bow before moving to the carriage and opening the door.

"Wow, you came." Jonathan smiled as he hopped from the coachman’s seat.

"Why are you here?"

Jonathan took the box with her other clothes inside and placed it in the coach.

"Count Draugr said you would be arriving on the train tonight and I was to wait here until you showed up. I've been here almost three hours. I was beginning to lose hope. Good thing I had Charlie and his stories to keep me company. Are you all right? What were you doing in London alone?"

Usually, she would have told Jonathan everything. About her father leaving, the money, her fight with Lucy, all of it. But something stopped her. In the past days, she'd come to learn that she could stand on her own two feet. No longer overshadowed by Lucy. And out from under her father's thumb, she'd begun to rediscover what it felt like to be herself. For the first time in a long time, she thought about her future and what she wanted from it. And as much as she hated to destroy his hopes, Jonathan was not that future. She needed to distance herself from both him and his friendship if she had any hope of letting him down gently.q

"Father took a job as a captain of a ship. I needed to go see his banker to get some money for supplies while he's gone."

How had Blue known that she hadn't gone home and would need a ride from the train station that night? The thought warmed her insides to see that he'd sent a coach for her. It meant that she hadn't done something to upset him the night they'd gone to the museum.

"Well, I'm glad you're safe, what with there being another two murders there this week. That makes ten in total over the last two weeks."

"I had no idea there were so many," she replied, walking to the coach.

"Didn't you read the newspaper?"

Mina shook her head. "I've never taken to reading it. I prefer books to the paper."

Jonathan looked her up and down.
